Welcome to Holistic Care Durham
Private Therapy Clinic & Usui Reiki Ryoho Training Centre in County Durham
A private therapy clinic and Usui Reiki Training Centre in County Durham, offering Reiki treatments, Tsuboki Japanese facials, therapeutic bodywork and professional Reiki training from Shoden to Shihan Teacher level. Founded by Leanne Barker, author, former NHS nurse, devoted Usui Reiki Master Teacher, full member of the UK Reiki Federation and founder of The Reiki Dojo.
Usui Reiki Ryoho Training Centre
Holistic Care Durham is home to a dedicated Reiki training centre for those who want to learn Reiki with depth, care and respect for the roots of the practice. Training is offered across all levels, from Shoden, the beginning of the path, through to Okuden, Shinpiden and Shihan Teacher Mentorship, with a strong focus on self-cultivation, the Reiki Precepts, Gasshō, Reiju, ethics, lineage and continued support after training.
This is Reiki taught as a living practice and students are supported beyond the course itself through The Reiki Dojo, ongoing teachings, Reiki shares and community practice.
Treatments
At Holistic Care Durham, I offer therapeutic massage, reflexology, Tsuboki (Japanese) facials, Reiki treatments and Reiki training in County Durham. My work is shaped by a deeper understanding of how stress, overwhelm and long periods of coping can affect the body and mind, creating tension, fatigue and a sense of disconnection. This is calm, thoughtful care designed to support your wellbeing and help you feel more like yourself again.
Usui Reiki Ryoho
Reiki sits at the heart of my work and is offered here as both treatment and training through the full pathway of Usui Reiki Ryōhō, from Shoden to Shihan Teacher Mentorship.
My approach to Reiki is rooted in self-cultivation, Japanese practice, ethics, lineage and lived experience. I teach with depth and seriousness, but also with warmth, humour and a very human approach, so students feel safe, supported and able to grow in their own understanding and practice.
For me, Reiki training is not simply about completing a course or receiving a certificate. It is about learning well, practicing honestly, being properly supported, and becoming part of a wider Reiki community where the practice can continue to deepen over time.
Full Reiki Training Pathway
Shoden Reiki Level I: The beginning of the path. Reiki for self-practice, grounding, the Precepts, Gasshō, Reiju and learning how to build a sincere foundation.
Okuden Reiki Level II: The deeper teachings. Symbols, distance practice, emotional and mental support, and a deeper commitment to daily Reiki practice.
Shinpiden Reiki Level III: Master level. A return to the self, deeper practice, responsibility, and the embodiment of Reiki as a way of life.
Shihan Teacher Mentorship: For those called to teach Reiki with integrity, structure, ethics and respect for the tradition.
The Reiki Dojo
The Reiki Dojo is my monthly membership for students who want their Reiki practice to keep growing long after a course has finished. Created as an ongoing home for learning, support and community, it offers far more than a one-off training experience.
Members have access to an extended online Reiki training library filled with deeper teachings, practices, meditations, guidance and support, alongside monthly Reiki Shares held both online and in person. The Dojo also brings people together through friendly gatherings, days out in nature and occasional trips away, creating a community that feels warm, genuine and alive.
For those who want Reiki to remain a living part of their life, The Reiki Dojo offers ongoing support, deeper learning and a genuine sense of community.
Meet Leanne, Your Therapist and Reiki Teacher
Leanne Barker is the founder of Holistic Care Durham, a dedicated therapy and Reiki training centre in County Durham. A former NHS nurse, author, Usui Reiki Master Teacher and full member of the UK Reiki Federation, Leanne brings years of clinical and therapeutic experience to her work.
Her approach is shaped by extensive training, skilled hands, ongoing study of the body and nervous system, and a deep commitment to returning Reiki to its roots as a practice of self-cultivation, ethics, presence and care.
Ethics, Safeguarding & Professional Standards
At Holistic Care Durham, ethics, safeguarding and professional care are at the centre of everything I offer, whether you are coming for a treatment, Reiki training, mentoring, CPD or practitioner support.
My work is rooted in respect, consent, compassion, professional boundaries and safe practice. I believe that therapeutic and spiritual spaces should feel clear, grounded and properly held. You should never feel pressured, confused, shamed, overpowered or asked to give away your own judgement.
I am Leanne Barker, founder of Holistic Care Durham, a Reiki Master Teacher, Integrative Therapist, former NHS nurse and full member of the UK Reiki Federation. My background in healthcare and therapy strongly shapes the way I work. I take client care, student support, confidentiality, consent, safeguarding and scope of practice seriously.
Consent and choice
All treatments and training are offered with consent, choice and clear communication. Before a treatment, I will explain what is involved and give you space to ask questions. You are always welcome to say if something does not feel right, if you need the pressure adjusted, if you need a pause, or if you would prefer not to receive a particular part of a treatment.
In Reiki training, I aim to create a learning space where questions are welcomed and students are supported to practice with confidence, care and personal responsibility. Reiki is never taught through pressure, fear, control or hierarchy.
Boundaries and scope of practice
Reiki, bodywork, reflexology, Tsuboki facial treatments, mentoring and spiritual teaching are not a replacement for medical care, mental health support, diagnosis or emergency help.
I do not diagnose, prescribe, claim to cure, or ask clients or students to stop medical treatment. If something appears to be outside my professional scope, I may suggest that you speak with your GP, a qualified healthcare professional, counsellor, therapist or appropriate service.
Clear boundaries protect both the person receiving support and the practitioner. They help create a space where care can be offered safely and respectfully.
Safeguarding
Safeguarding means taking reasonable steps to protect children, young people and vulnerable adults from harm, exploitation, coercion or unsafe practice. Although most of my work is with adults, I remain alert to safeguarding concerns within both therapy and training settings. If something is disclosed that suggests serious risk of harm to you or another person, I may need to take appropriate action or seek guidance from relevant services.
Confidentiality is important, but it cannot be absolute where there is a serious safeguarding concern, risk of harm, abuse, neglect or legal requirement to share information.
Confidentiality
Your personal information, treatment details, student records and anything shared within sessions or training are treated with respect and confidentiality.
I will not share your private information without your consent unless there is a safeguarding concern, legal requirement, or serious risk of harm. Student discussions, case studies and practitioner development work must also respect confidentiality and anonymity.
Students are expected to uphold confidentiality when practicing Reiki, completing case studies or taking part in group training.
Reiki training ethics
Reiki training at Holistic Care Durham is taught as a practice of self-cultivation, compassion, presence and responsibility.
Students are encouraged to practice Reiki safely, honestly and within their level of training. Practitioner certificates, where relevant, are only issued when the required training, practice and case study expectations have been met.
Students are not encouraged to rush into professional practice before they are ready. Reiki should be offered with humility, care, consent and clear understanding of professional boundaries.
Inclusion and respect
Everyone who comes to Holistic Care Durham is treated with dignity and respect.
I aim to offer a space that is welcoming, compassionate and grounded. I recognise that people arrive with different bodies, backgrounds, needs, nervous systems, life experiences and ways of learning. Where possible, I will make reasonable adjustments to support access, comfort and understanding.
Respect must be mutual. I ask all clients, students and practitioners to communicate kindly, respect boundaries, and honour the shared nature of a therapeutic or training space.
Professional responsibility
I hold myself to high standards in my work and continue to study, practice, reflect and develop as a teacher and therapist.
My intention is to offer treatments and training that are safe, ethical, compassionate and rooted in real practice. Reiki, for me, is not about performance, status or control. It is a way of practicing care, presence and responsibility, both for ourselves and for others.
If you ever have a concern about a treatment, training session or professional boundary, you are welcome to contact me directly so it can be addressed with care and clarity.
