Frequently Asked Questions
Who is Holistic Care Durham for?
Holistic Care Durham is for people looking for grounded therapeutic support, Reiki treatments, Tsuboki Japanese facial treatments, reflexology, bodywork, Reiki training or practitioner development. Some people come because they feel tired, stressed, overwhelmed or disconnected from themselves. Others come because they are drawn to Reiki and want to learn properly, with depth, ethics and respect for the roots of Usui Reiki Ryōhō.
My work is calm, professional and compassionate. Reiki is at the heart of everything I offer, whether you are coming for a treatment, training, mentoring or a deeper period of support.
Who will I be seeing?
You will be seen by me, Leanne Barker, founder of Holistic Care Durham. I am a Usui Reiki Master Teacher, Integrative Therapist, former NHS nurse, author, full member of the UK Reiki Federation and founder of The Reiki Dojo. My background in healthcare, therapy and Reiki shapes the way I work, with clear boundaries, consent, professional care and a strong focus on safe, grounded practice.
What therapies do you offer?
I offer Reiki treatments, online Reiki, bespoke Reiki sessions, Tsuboki Reiki Facial treatments, reflexology with Reiki, and Reiki-led bodywork.
Some treatments are fully clothed, such as Reiki and online Reiki. Other treatments include therapeutic touch, massage, facial massage or reflexology, depending on what you have booked. Each treatment description explains what is included, so please read carefully before booking.
Is Reiki included in all treatments?
Yes, Reiki is central to my work.
Some treatments are pure Reiki, such as a traditional Reiki treatment or online Reiki. Other treatments include Reiki woven throughout, alongside massage, reflexology, Tsuboki facial massage or therapeutic touch.
For me, Reiki is not an add-on. It is the foundation of how I work, how I hold the space, and how I support the whole person.
Do you offer treatments for men and women?
Yes, many of my treatments and all Reiki training options are open to all, unless stated otherwise.
However, full body massage treatments are currently offered to women only.
Reiki treatments, online Reiki, reflexology with Reiki, Tsuboki Reiki Facial treatments, Reiki training, Reiki mentoring and Reiki CPD are open to all, unless a specific treatment description states otherwise.
What should I book if I am unsure?
If you are unsure, the Reiki Treatment is often the best place to begin. It is fully clothed, deeply grounding and suitable for many people who feel tired, stressed, emotionally full, tense or in need of support.
If you feel you need more time, the Bespoke Reiki Treatment gives a longer session with Reiki at the centre and therapeutic touch included where appropriate.
If you are drawn to facial massage, skin support and deep tension release around the face, jaw, scalp, neck and shoulders, the Tsuboki Reiki Facial may be more suitable.
What is a Reiki treatment like?
During a Reiki treatment, you remain fully clothed and lie comfortably on the treatment couch. Reiki is offered through steady hand placements, either lightly on the body or just above, depending on what feels appropriate and consented to.
A Reiki treatment is not massage. There is no need to talk throughout the session. Many people experience a sense of deep rest, warmth, emotional release, steadiness or feeling more settled within themselves. Each person experiences Reiki differently, and there is no right way to feel it.
What is online Reiki?
Online Reiki is a live distance Reiki session held remotely. You do not need to travel to the centre. Before the session, I will explain how to prepare. During the treatment time, you can lie down or sit somewhere comfortable while Reiki is offered remotely.
Online Reiki can be helpful if you are unable to attend in person, feel more comfortable receiving from home, or would like calm support without travelling.
What is Tsuboki Reiki Facial?
The Tsuboki Reiki Facial is a Reiki-led Japanese facial treatment combining Tsuboki facial massage, IMAGE Skincare, LED red light therapy and soothing work around the face, jaw, scalp, neck and shoulders. It is ideal if you feel tired, tense, puffy, emotionally full, or if you hold stress through the jaw, face, head, neck or shoulders.
This is not a standard beauty facial. It is a therapeutic facial treatment with Reiki woven throughout.
What is Reflexology with Reiki?
Reflexology with Reiki is a grounding treatment working through the feet and lower legs, with Reiki present throughout the session.
It may be helpful if you feel tired, heavy, overstimulated, run down or in need of support that helps you feel more settled. The treatment combines reflexology, lower leg and foot massage, and steady Reiki-led care.
Do I need to prepare before a treatment?
You do not need to do anything complicated. Please arrive on time, wear comfortable clothing, and allow yourself a little space afterwards where possible. Try not to rush straight into something demanding if you can avoid it.
If you are coming for Reiki, reflexology or facial treatment, you may want to drink water afterwards and notice how you feel over the rest of the day.
Do you diagnose or give medical advice?
No. I do not diagnose, prescribe, claim to cure, or ask you to stop any medical treatment.
Reiki, massage, reflexology, Tsuboki facial treatments and mentoring are complementary therapies and do not replace medical care, counselling, mental health support or emergency help.
If something appears outside my professional scope, I may suggest you contact your GP or another qualified healthcare professional.
Do you offer Reiki training?
Yes. Holistic Care Durham is a dedicated Usui Reiki Ryōhō Training Centre in County Durham.
I offer Reiki training from Shoden, Reiki Level 1, through to Okuden, Reiki Level 2, Shinpiden, Reiki Master level, and Shihan Teacher training.
Training is available in small groups, 1:1, and online via Zoom where appropriate.
What makes your Reiki training different?
My Reiki training is rooted in Usui Reiki Ryoho, with a strong emphasis on self-practice, the Reiki precepts, Japanese Reiki techniques, Reiju, ethics, consent, professional boundaries and daily practice.
I do not teach Reiki as a quick certificate or a collection of techniques. Reiki begins with the self. It is a practice of self-cultivation, compassion, presence and responsibility. My groups are kept small so each student can be properly supported.
How many people are in your group Reiki courses?
Group Reiki training is kept small, usually up to four students. This allows time for questions, practice, discussion and support. Smaller groups help the training feel more personal, grounded and properly held.
Can I train 1:1?
Yes. Bespoke 1:1 Reiki training is available at all levels, either in person or online via Zoom, depending on the level and what is appropriate.
1:1 Reiki training is mainly available on Mondays and Saturdays, with occasional exceptions.
You must contact me before purchasing 1:1 training so we can discuss the level, format, dates and whether it is the right option for you.
Do you offer Reiki refreshers?
Yes. Reiki refresher training is available if you have already completed a Reiki level and would like to revisit it with more clarity, confidence and support.
A refresher is only for levels you have already completed. It does not move you into a new Reiki level and does not replace full training for a level you have not yet taken.
Do you offer Reiki mentoring?
Yes. 1:1 Reiki mentoring is available for Reiki students, practitioners and teachers who would like support with confidence, ethics, boundaries, treatment structure, client care, self-practice or teaching questions.
Mentoring is not an attunement and does not certify you in a new Reiki level. It is a supportive professional space for grounded Reiki guidance.
