Preparing for Reiki Training

If you have booked onto Reiki training, or are considering it, it is natural to wonder whether there is anything you should be doing beforehand.

In Usui Reiki Ryoho, there is nothing you need to prepare in advance. This is not a practice that is developed through reading, or improved by trying to understand it intellectually before you begin. It is something you come into through direct experience, and that experience unfolds over time through your own awareness and practice.

For that reason, there is no expectation that you arrive with prior knowledge. Many people come to Reiki having already formed ideas about what it is, or how it should feel. These ideas often come from modern interpretations, which can vary widely in their accuracy and depth. It is not necessary to hold onto these.

In training, we return to something much simpler. Rather than adding more concepts, we begin by noticing what is already present within the body, and how the mind relates to that. It is also common to expect that Reiki will produce a particular kind of experience. That there will be a clear sensation, or a noticeable change. Sometimes this happens and often it does not, especially in the beginning. Neither is an indication of whether the practice is “working”. I

n Usui Reiki Ryoho, we are not trying to create an experience. We are learning how to remain with what is already present, without interfering. This is a very different approach to what most people are used to, and it can take time to settle into.

If you feel drawn to read before your training, you may do so, but it is advisable to keep this minimal.

There is a large amount of information available, much of which reflects modern adaptations rather than the original practice. This can introduce unnecessary complexity or expectation.

Your understanding will develop more clearly through your own direct experience during training.

In the days leading up to your course, there is nothing you need to change. You may find it helpful to ensure you are rested, hydrated, and able to give your attention to the training, but there is no specific preparation required.

When you arrive, your role is straightforward… to be open, to listen, observe and practice. There is no requirement to perform, or to achieve a particular outcome. Reiki is not something you need to “get right”. It is something you return to, again and again, through practice.

At its core, Usui Reiki Ryoho is simple. However, it asks for a level of attention and honesty that many people are not used to. It asks you to bring your awareness back into the body, to notice clearly, and to begin to recognise how often we attempt to control or change our experience. This is where the practice begins.

Everything you need will be provided during your training. Nothing further is required from you beforehand. If you have any questions, you are welcome to get in touch. Otherwise, simply arrive as you are and we will begin from there.

Practical Information

For your training, please wear comfortable clothing. You will be sitting, lying down, and working practically throughout the day, so it’s important that you feel at ease in what you are wearing. There is no need for anything specific, just come in clothes that allow you to relax and move comfortably.

Please bring:

  • a notebook and pen for your own reflections

  • your lunch for the day

We will have short breaks, and time to step away as needed, but bringing your own food allows the day to remain settled and uninterrupted.

A few days before your training begins, I will open a WhatsApp group for your course. This is simply a space where I will:

  • share any final information

  • confirm timings and details

  • and ensure everyone feels prepared before arriving

You do not need to engage beyond what feels comfortable it is there for ease and communication. If you have any questions at any point before your training, you are always welcome to get in touch directly with me 07388181980.

Booking & Cancellations

All training bookings are non-refundable. This allows me to prepare and hold your place on the course with care and intention, as spaces are limited.

If you are unable to attend your scheduled training, your booking can be transferred to a future date. There is no pressure to rush this, we will find a suitable alternative when you are ready.

If preferred, you also have the option to exchange your booking for a treatment at Holistic Care Durham.

In the unlikely event that I need to cancel or reschedule your training, you will be offered:

  • an alternative date

  • or the option to transfer your booking

If you have any questions or need to make changes, please just get in touch.

I’m really looking forward to welcoming you to Holistic Care Durham. There’s something about making the decision to step into this work that often begins before you even arrive, maybe a sense of knowing, or curiosity, or just the feeling that it’s time. However it’s come about for you, I’m genuinely glad you’re here.

The space itself is calm, private, and held with care. It’s somewhere you can step into and feel a shift quite quickly, away from the noise and pace outside, and into something more settled. Most people notice that as soon as they walk through the door.

You don’t need to arrive in any particular state. Whether you’re feeling excited, unsure, curious, or completely open, all of that is welcome. There’s nothing to get right beforehand, and nothing expected of you beyond simply showing up.

Over the time you’re here, things tend to unfold in their own way. Often more quietly than expected, but in a way that stays with you long after you leave.

I’ll look forward to meeting you soon and beginning this work together.

Continuing Your Practice

The Reiki Dojo

Alongside your training, you’ll also have the option to join the Reiki Dojo. This is a space I’ve created for those who want to continue their practice in a more consistent and supported way, beyond the training days themselves.

Inside the Dojo, you’ll find:

  • guided practices and meditations

  • deeper teachings around Reiki and its foundations

  • regular Reiki shares (both online and in person)

  • and ongoing support and training days as your understanding develops over time

It’s not something you need to join in order to complete your training as everything you need will be given to you during your course. However, some students choose to join before they begin, as it can help them arrive feeling a little more familiar with the work. Others join afterwards, once they’ve had time to settle into their experience and feel ready to continue. Both are completely fine. The Dojo is simply there as an extension of the work, if and when it feels right for you.
