Reiki Treatments in County Durham
Sometimes the difficulty is not knowing that you need support. It is knowing what to book when you feel exhausted, overwhelmed, physically tense, emotionally stretched or unable to switch off.
You may have been carrying too much for too long. Your sleep may be poor, your body may feel constantly on alert, or you may be dealing with pain, illness, bereavement, anxiety or a period of major change. You might know that you need time to stop, but not want counselling, conversation or a treatment that asks anything from you.
A Reiki treatment gives you dedicated time to lie down, receive and let your system settle without pressure to explain yourself, achieve anything or have a particular experience.
Reiki treatments at Holistic Care Durham are offered by Leanne Barker, an experienced Reiki Master Teacher, integrative therapist, former NHS nurse and full member of the UK Reiki Federation.
My approach is professional, grounded and based on the practice of Usui Reiki Ryōhō. I do not offer psychic readings, diagnose energetic problems or make promises about what Reiki will cure. I offer the treatment with care, presence and respect for the person in front of me.
What Reiki Supports
People come for Reiki for many different reasons. Some are mentally and physically exhausted. Others are living with pain, anxiety, grief, long-term illness or the effects of prolonged stress. Many tell me they feel unable to rest properly, even when they have time to do so.
Reiki may support:
- Deep rest
- Nervous-system settling
- Emotional support during difficult periods
- A greater sense of steadiness
- Relaxation alongside pain or muscular tension
- Recovery after illness or a demanding period
- Time away from constant responsibility
- Support alongside conventional healthcare
Reiki is not a medical treatment and does not replace appropriate healthcare, but it can sit alongside it as part of a wider approach to wellbeing.
What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese system of practice developed by Mikao Usui in the early twentieth century. During a treatment, Reiki is offered through the practitioner’s hands, either resting lightly on the body or held just above it. You remain fully clothed throughout.
The practitioner is not the source of Reiki and does not force energy towards a chosen result. My role is to offer Reiki, stay present and create the right conditions for your system to receive what is appropriate for you.
You do not need to believe in Reiki, understand Japanese practices or know what you are meant to feel.
What Happens During Your Appointment?
We begin with a short conversation so that I understand how you are feeling and whether there is anything I need to be aware of before the treatment. You will then lie comfortably on the treatment couch, fully clothed. Blankets, bolsters and additional support can be used where needed, and Reiki can also be offered while seated if lying down is uncomfortable.
The treatment is offered through a series of hand positions, either with light contact or with the hands held just above the body. This is always based on your comfort and consent.
Some people notice warmth, tingling, heaviness, emotion or a strong sense of rest. Others feel very little while the treatment is taking place. There is no correct response, and the treatment has not failed because the experience was subtle. At the end, you will have time to sit up slowly, drink some water and ask any practical questions before leaving.

- Unable to switch off
- Anxious or unsettled
- Affected by pain or long-term illness
- Drained after caring for others
- In need of support during grief or change

Distance Reiki
Distance Reiki is available for people who cannot attend the therapy centre or who would prefer to receive Reiki from home. At the agreed time, you can sit or lie somewhere comfortable while Reiki is offered remotely.
Distance sessions do not include psychic readings, spiritual messages, predictions or diagnosis. You will receive Reiki only. This option may suit people who are unwell, recovering, caring for others, living further away or unable to travel comfortably.

Reiki Combination Treatment
Some people know they need Reiki but also want physical treatment for tension, pain or fatigue. Reiki can be combined with selected treatments, including reflexology, head and neck work and massage. These appointments are adapted to the individual rather than delivered as a fixed routine.
Reiki and Reflexology
A combined treatment for people who want the physical support of reflexology alongside time to receive Reiki.
A Professional and Responsible Approach
I worked in the NHS from the age of 21 until the age of 39, before moving fully into therapeutic practice. That background has shaped how I work. I take consent, confidentiality, appropriate boundaries and scope of practice seriously. I will never ask you to stop medication, ignore symptoms or delay seeking medical advice.
I do not diagnose through Reiki, claim to remove illness or tell clients that symptoms are caused by blocked energy. Where something needs medical assessment, I will always encourage you to speak with your GP, consultant or another appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
Who Can Receive Reiki?
Reiki can be adapted for people with different levels of mobility, fatigue, pain and physical need. Please contact me before booking if you:
- Are pregnant
- Have recently had surgery
- Have an unstable medical condition
- Need help transferring onto the treatment couch
- Require specific access arrangements
- Are unsure which treatment would suit you best
Reiki can be offered seated where lying down is not suitable.
